Heisman rankings Week 6: Jonathan Taylor running over everyone
6. Sam Ehlinger, QB, Texas
Playing a dangerous looking-ahead game on the road against West Virginia, Sam Ehlinger and the Texas Longhorns were able to handle their business and get the victory. And, as has basically been the case in every game that Tom Herman’s team has played this season, they were able to do so on the strength of their star quarterback.
Ehlinger, in truth, didn’t have his best day throwing the ball. He went only 18-of-33 for 211 yards with two touchdowns and a pick but he did show off his tough running style with nine carries for 45 yards and two trips to the end zone. He was the gamer that Texas needs to lead their offense and, while he may not have much Heisman upside, he’s more than proven deserving of being in the conversation throughout the year.
5. Justin Fields, QB, Ohio State
Justin Fields and the Ohio State Buckeyes got off to a slow start against Michigan State’s stout defense on Saturday night. However, as the game went on, they wore down Sparty and were able to pull away for a decisive victory. But while the quarterback remained impressive on Saturday, this game was more about J.K. Dobbins than it was about featuring Fields.
The Georgia transfer finished the win with 206 yards passing, two touchdowns and an interception while also adding 61 rushing yards and another rushing score. Make no mistake, FIelds has been superb this season. And while he has 26 total touchdowns (18 passing, eight rushing), the yardage totals just aren’t there with 1,298 yards passing and 283 yards rushing for him to be a top-four contender for the Heisman right now.
