2. New Orleans Saints

Just because it’s obvious doesn’t make it any less true. The Saints clearly value Bridgewater highly, and he clearly sees the appeal of the situation in New Orleans as he spurned what should have been opportunities elsewhere to start this year. Head coach Sean Payton has a five-year contract extension now, through the 2025 season, and he surely wants a say in who will succeed Drew Brees under center as soon as next year.

As long as Brees’ future plans aren’t clear or known, in or outside of the Saints’ building, there will be questions. Bridgewater could just sign another one-year deal next offseason and stick around as first in line to take over when Brees calls it a career. But Bridgewater also probably won’t want to, and shouldn’t, wait much beyond next season for a clear opportunity to play.

But if there aren’t any good, clear opportunities to start next offseason, there are worse things than staying behind Brees for one more year and with one of the league’s top offensive minds in Payton. Bridgewater may be a willing participant in the succession plan, possibly with some inside knowledge of what Brees is thinking.
