Fantasy football week 6: Bye week replacements
By Bill Pivetz
There are some valuable fantasy football players on the waiver wire for you to add as a bye week replacement this week.
Week 6 has four teams on a bye, the Bills, Colts, Bears and Raiders, leaving fantasy football owners without some important pieces to their team. Their collective 13-7 record proves that they have players that fantasy owners want to own.
The main players that will be unavailable this week are Frank Gore, BUF D/ST, T.Y. Hilton, Marlon Mack, Jack Doyle, Eric Ebron, CHI D/ST, Allen Robinson, David Montgomery, Josh Jacobs and Darren Waller. It’s pretty much every skill player from each team outside of the quarterbacks.
While this isn’t my normal waiver wire post, this post will feature players that are worth picking up for week 6 as a bye week fill-in. These players, unless you are in the deepest of leagues, should be a one-week add and then dropped once your starters return for their week 7 games.
You likely already made your waiver claims for the important positions. But, if you still need a replacement starter or are looking for a bench option just in case, these players fit the bill.
Due to the number of players on bye from each position, I will list two running backs, one wide receiver, tight end and defense. They will be owned in less than 40 percent of ESPN leagues.
Chase Edmonds, RB
Kyler Murray has just two touchdowns in his last three games. The Cardinals are relying more on the run to move the ball. David Johnson is the go-to running back but Edmonds has seen an increased workload over the last couple of games.
He had five carries in the first three games. He then had six and eight in the following two weeks. Edmonds rushed for 68 yards and a touchdown as well as three catches for 18 yards. I don’t expect it to turn into a 50-50 split, but Edmonds could see more playing time as a pass-catching back against the Falcons, who have allowed just over 20 fantasy points to running backs.
Ito Smith, RB
Speaking of the Falcons, Smith has scored at least 11 points in each of the last two games. Most of his value comes from the passing game. He has eight catches and 65 yards in that span.
Devonta Freeman is the lead back but has not been effective, 3.3 yards per carry. He is also becoming a force in the passing game, 13 catches for 112 yards and a touchdown in his last two games.
The Cardinals have not given up many rushing yards to running backs but have allowed the third-highest catch rate to opposing running backs.
Auden Tate, WR
With A.J. Green still out and John Ross on the IR, Tate has stepped up and has been a reliable receiver over the last three weeks. He has 13 catches for 164 yards and a touchdown in that span.
Andy Dalton has been average (nothing new), but the receivers have valuable in most leagues. Tate and the Bengals face the Ravens this week. While their front line has been good, the secondary has been a weak point.
They allow the 10th-most fantasy points to opposing wide receivers. As long as Dalton can get the ball out, I like Tate as a flex in deep PPR leagues.
Geoff Swaim, TE
The Jaguars offense looks to be better with Gardner Minshew under center than Nick Foles. They have solid wide receivers and top-15 running back and a breakout tight end. Unfortunately, the latter, James O’Shaughnessy, landed on the IR.
This opens up a spot for Swaim. In nine games with the Cowboys last season, he caught 26 passes for 242 yards and a touchdown.
Swamin and the Jaguars face the Saints in a battle of the backup quarterbacks. The Saints allow 10.2 fantasy points per game to tight ends.
Broncos D/ST
After a mediocre four weeks, the Broncos defense showed up and scored 11 points against the Chargers. They have five sacks, all coming in week four, and two interceptions, both from last week.
Denver faces the Titans this week. The Tennessee offense is 27th in total yards, 23rd in points per game and 24th in first downs per game. This Broncos defense should be able to rack up another fantasy-relevant performance against this offense.
Outside of the big plays from Corey Davis and A.J. Brown, there is not much to be afraid of in Tennessee.
The waiver wire does not have the best options to keep for multiple weeks. But, if you need a one-week plugin for an injured player or someone on a bye, these players should be able to get the job done. Keep checking out FanSided Fantasy for all your fantasy football advice!
