1. Scott Gomez

There are plenty of mixed emotions and memories for Devils fans when it comes to former NHL forward, Scott Gomez. Yet, by now, most fans have more than likely forgiven “Gomer” for signing with the New York Rangers via 2007 NHL Free Agency after spending seven seasons with Jersey.

And, Gomez’s 1999-00 campaign goes down as the Devils’ top rookie season of all-time, and here’s why.

For starters, the 19-year-old made the team out of training camp, which had a stacked roster with little room for a rookie to crack the lineup full-time.

The Anchorage, AK native never looked back and set the Devils rookie record for points in a season when No. 23 recorded 70 points (19 goals, 51 assists) and played in all 82 games. His 70 points and dynamic play earned him the Calder Trophy, which also acts as the last time a New Jersey skater took home the honor.

Let’s not forget that playing in all 82 games as a rookie during the Lou Lamoriello era was just as impressive.

Keep in mind that the former 1998 first-round draft pick (27th overall) also netted seven power-play goals and chipped in 20 helpers on the man advantage. Talk about a difference-maker?

The dynamic skater was also one of three Devils (Martin Brodeur, Scott Stevens) that year nominated to the 2000 NHL All-Star game in Toronto.

Gomez’s success didn’t stop at the close of the regular season, either. No. 23 recorded 10 points (four goals, six assists) in 23 games played during the team’s run to the Stanley Cup Final, and he came through in the clutch after netting two game-winning goals (tied for second on the team).

It’s safe to say that Scott Gomez’s 1999-00 rookie campaign goes down as the best all-time for the New Jersey Devils.
