5 offseason moves the Dodgers should make
By Sean Sears
The bullpen needs a facelift
After this season, the Dodgers may be graduating some of their relievers like Dustin May and Julio Urias to the rotation so they’ll need to add at least a few new arms. But with closer Kenley Jansen and his $18 mil player option, along with his dip in velocity and increasing ERA since 2016, the Dodgers could use some insurance behind the 32-year-old closer.
There will be options on the market, Yankees Dellin Betances could be available, but Los Angeles may want to lean more towards guys like Will Smith or Will Harris who are less of a health risk. The Dodgers committed $25 mil to reliever Joe Kelly, which was backloaded so he’ll receive a raise from $3 mil to $8.5 mil for ‘20 and ‘21. LA is likely stuck with Kelly’s contract, but after his struggles in the regular season were amplified in Game 3 and 5 of the NLDS, they’ll likely give the 31-year-old reliever another shot but with a much shorter lease.
But for a group that had the 5th best bullpen ERA this season, the Dodgers still have some of the best relievers in the game. Adding another high leverage arm to this group adds some depth on the backend, but pitching issues the Dodgers ran into in the postseason may have more to do with the manager than the quality of pitchers LA has.
