3. Joe Girardi

Girardi may have his eye on the Chicago Cubs’ managerial opening, and the New York Mets are going to interview him for their open post. But he’s made no secret of his desire to manage again, and all options remain open. His experience in the New York media market is a point in his corner, and he’s a notably fiery guy who may provide the push the underachieving Phillies need going forward.

Girardi’s likely high asking price will be a turn-off to some owners (Fred Wilpon?). But if Phillies’ owner John Middleton is serious about getting the team to the next level by any means necessary, he won’t be strictly outbid for Girardi or any other manager who wants to come to Philadelphia if all other things are equal.

Girardi will have options if he wants to manage in 2020, just as he did a year ago before taking himself out of the running for jobs that really didn’t seem like a great fit anyway (Cincinnati Reds and Texas Rangers). He isn’t a perfect fit everywhere that has an opening currently, but a veteran-tilted Phillies’ roster and a franchise that is ready to make a real push to win immediately on all levels could bring Girardi to the City of Brotherly Love.
