Evening DraftKings college football quarterback picks October 12
Top Tier:
I don’t see the upside in paying the premium for Joe Burrow here. Jamie Newman is a much better play against Louisville, and he’ll get you some rushing yards. I’d play Ian Book over Burrow as well against the struggling USC secondary.
Middle Tier:
Fortunately, Kelly Bryant wasn’t seriously injured against Troy. It looked bad when he first went down. The Tigers say Bryant is going to start against Ole Miss. While Mississippi isn’t a poor defense, they have allowed their share of passing yards this year.
That said, Tyler Huntley is exactly the same price against a really bad Oregon State defense. Huntley can run and throw, so there is a lot of upside here in the middle tier in what should be a fairly easy win for the Utes.
There’s a lot of land mines in the lower tier. Lots of good names with bad matchups such as John Rhys Plumlee against Missouri. You could maybe run him in a GPP because the upside is there, but this Missouri defense has been very good so far.
Bargain Shoppers:
I don’t trust either quarterback in frigid Minneapolis here. That game is going to be dominated on the ground, which definitely favors the Gophers. I would consider Adrian Martinez if he were fully healthy, but I doubt he’ll be as elusive as usual. Look elsewhere.
Kyle Trask played well enough against a strong Auburn defense that I would consider him here since he is so cheap. The matchup isn’t great, but the reward is worth the price for the risk.
If Martinez can’t go, I will use Noah Vedral. Vedral is cheap and deceptively fast. Not much is known about his passing prowess or lack thereof, but I would use him on running ability alone for that price.
