DraftKings PGA: 2019 CJ Cup Picks and Analysis

This week the PGA Tour travels across the Pacific to Asia. The CJ Cup marks the first of three straight tournaments in Asia. The Club at Nine Bridges hosts this event for the third consecutive year. The par-72, sub-7,200 yard course is one the easier courses on the schedule, but the change of scenery / grass types lends to some unfamiliar conditions for players. Brooks Koepka won the 2018 edition with a score of 21-under, shooting an 8-under 64 in final round to hold off a surging Gary Woodland. Justin Thomas claimed the 2017 prize, shooting a 9-under for the tournament in extreme wind and rain-soaked conditions.

The tour returns to Bentgrass from the Bermuda of Houston. Although the Bentgrass of Asia may play different to the Bentgrass we have in the states due to the differing climate and conditions. Speaking of conditions, we have no idea what could happen here. Last week at Houston we saw a clear weather advantage from the wind, and we may see something like that again this week. Being a coastal course, we never know what conditions the sea will bring.

Before we get into the picks, I will commend Lanto Griffin for grabbing his first PGA Tour victory. The irons and putter rode hot, and it is good to see a youngster who has grind so hard grab victory.

Key Stats
The keys stats that I am focusing on this week for 2019 CJ Cup DraftKings PGA GPP contests:

Tee to Green Gained

Approach Gained

Birdie or Better Gained

Par 5 Scoring gained

Bent Grass Putting Gained

As always, you should be building your own models. FantasyNational.com and FutureOfFantasy.com are great tools to use.

DraftKings PGA: 2019 CJ Cup Picks

Due to the condensed field, I am softening my core, and thus am only recommending 3 plays.

$11,700 Justin Thomas

He is too expensive and he has not played enough golf in the 2019-2020 season to be priced up this heavily. That is what I hope people are saying to depress ownership! I absolutely love JT this week. He is a killer, and he seems to like this course. Yes, his only victory came in a tsunami-like stupor that was the 2017 CJ Cup. However, he is set for a huge season, one in which he started off T3 at Safeway. The ball striking is elite, and I love JT on some rest after battling injury last season. His stats are elite, top-5 in basically every category. 1st in my model. Please let us see <20% ownership.

$8,700 Joaquin Niemann

I have a disgusting affinity for Niemann on Bentgrass. Is it a problem? Yes, it is clearly a problem. Everyone loves the wonder-kid. I am just telling you what you already know, but the kid is the Argentine Justin Thomas. The stats back me up. He missed his last cut, so hopefully, that gets people to shy away. Hint, it won’t. He will be popular and I don’t care, because my core will be Brad Pitt Fight Club tight. 10th in my model and Bentgrass is the only grass I trust him on.

$6,500 Matt Jones

This may be an Aussie week. Hell, what am I saying? This IS and Aussie week. Congrats Matt Jones, you have made it. $6500 for this guy is a travesty. The savvy DFSers will be on this so hard. I have no quarrels about sharing the profits. Jones ranks 14th in APP, 15th in T2G, and 11th in Par-5 scoring. In my condition model where I predict how the course will play, he ranks 15th. Cash it, young fella.
