2. Tennessee Titans

Yes, Mariota could very well land right back with the Titans. Tannehill is also effectively in a contract year, and even if he starts the final 10 games and plays well he’s hardly guaranteed to be back in 2020. Whereas the Buccaneers have to be ready to completely wash their hands of Winston, Tennessee may not quite be in the same place with Mariota. If he gets back on the field this season and plays well, as unlikely as the latter seems at this point, the odds he is re-signed would go up.

The Titans are 2-4 right now. But it’s possible they don’t completely bottom out (no matter who is playing quarterback), and come in at 6-10 or 7-9. Then they would not be in position to draft one of the top signal callers in the 2020 class, and be looking toward veteran options and possibly a mid-round draft pick rookie to fill their quarterback depth chart.

The devil you know may be better than the devil you don’t. No team knows Mariota better–warts, potential and all–than the Titans. Maybe they decide to give it one more shot next year, on a bargain contract of course, then cut bait completely after that with complete, irreversible acknowledgement it won’t work.
