2. Deivi Garcia

The inclusion of the organization’s No. 1 overall prospect is understandably going to raise quite a few eyebrows. Garcia is absolutely a big-time talent, but he’s not ready to help the Yankees win now. Given the condition of the rest of the roster, that means it’s time for Cashman to cash in on one of his elite prospects.

None of this means the Yankees are going to part with Garcia easily. He should only be included in a deal that brings an All-Star level talent back to the Bronx. The obvious move for the front office would be to deal him for a more established starting pitcher.

That doesn’t mean it’s the only sort of deal that Garcia can be included in. The Yankees also will entertain the idea of dealing for a new starting shortstop this offseason. If Cashman decides that re-signing Didi Gregorius is too expensive, that could become the organization’s top priority during the Winter Meetings.

Garcia could also be moved for a prospect at a different position. That sort of trade isn’t exactly the norm in MLB, but the Yankees aren’t afraid to be different. If Cashman can flip his top minor league starter for a center fielder he likes more, it could be a move worth making. At any rate, this is an offseason where the Yankees should be trying to convert potential talents into current stars.
