FanDuel NBA Breakdown: Value Plays

For our purposes here at the Breakdown, we classify players priced at 5000 or less as “value plays.” You’re going to need several of these guys on most nights if you are going to fit in some high-priced stars into your lineups.

Point Guard – Tomas Satoransky (5k), Ish Smith (4.7k), Coby White (4.2k)

Sato is starting for the Bulls and should play 28-30 minutes. He won the job in camp, beating out Kris Dunn and rookie Coby White. He’s a low usage player but is great at picking up peripheral stats.

Ish Smith is starting for Washington tonight and has been a DFS darling for years as a backup or spot starter. The Wizards don’t really have many other options other than some untested rookies, so Smith should get plenty of run here at the beginning of the year.

White is way too cheap for a player of his talent! He’s coming off the bench but should be the primary scorer with that unit. Having his minutes staggered with LaVine is actually a good thing and playing next to another low usage guard like Dunn should be a boon to his fantasy value, too.

Shooting Guard – Tyler Herro (3.6k), Derrick Rose (4.8k)

Herro was a preseason darling, knocking down threes with ease and appears very much ready for the show. FanDuel dropped the ball on his price here, and he should start or be the first man off the bench with Dion Waiters suspended tonight. He’s an elite value in all formats.

Rose isn’t really a shooting guard (FanDuel still doesn’t have all these players in the right positions) but he certainly does shoot the ball a lot. He showed in the preseason that he will carry the load offensively with the second unit and he’s way too cheap for a guy who could push 25 minutes and take 12-15 shots.

Small Forward – Taurean Prince (5k), Kent Bazemore (4.9k)

The SF position tonight is pretty mediocre and I’m probably going to be paying down there in a lot of my lineups. There’s definitely some attractive options in the 5-6k range as well as both Prince and Bazemore here around 5k. Prince and Bazer are both GPP-type plays who are never very consistent but have high ceilings based on their ability to score and rack up defensive stats. Their roles on their new teams are still being carved out, but both guys could be solid sixth men with Brooklyn and Portland, respectively.

Power Forward – Zach Collins (4.6k), Marcus Morris (4.5k), Christian Wood (3.9k)

Zach Collins is way too cheap for a starter and solid fantasy producer, as is Marcus Morris. Both guys are starting for their teams tonight and could play 30+ minutes. I love paying up at power forward, but it’s to ignore these guys who could be massive values.

Christian Wood is another preseason favorite of mine (and my fellow preseason degenerates). He’s an elite fantasy player who could be unleashed tonight if Markieff Morris were to miss the game for the Pistons. Blake Griffin is already out, so he could get some minutes, but I wouldn’t use him unless we see Morris ruled out, too. Thon Maker and Wood are both solid plays, but Wood being PF eligible and under 4k makes him appealing.

Center – Jakob Poeltl (4.5k), Mo Bamba (3.9k)

Poeltl is the starting center in San Antonio and has a great matchup against the Knicks tonight. His minutes usually hover in the 25-minute range, but that’s plenty of time for him to do enough damage at this price.

Mo Bamba is a stat-stuffer that you always have to consider based on his blocks upside. I don’t like punting center, but if you’re going to do it then make sure you’re using one of these two guys.
