4. New York Giants

The Giants are not very good again this year, at 2-5 thus far, and head coach Pat Shurmur is surely headed for a second straight double-digit loss season in the early stages of what looks like a rebuild/reset. It will be hard to justify keeping him for a third season if or when that happens though, and a move for a bigger name coach could easily follow.

Harbaugh would bring instant credibility to the picture for the Giants, after the entirely uninteresting downturn that has occurred under Ben McAdoo and Shurmur over the last few seasons. He has also proven he can lead quick turnarounds, as the 49ers missed the playoffs in eight straight seasons (below .500 record seven times) before he arrived and promptly went 13-3 in his first season.

Some of Harbaugh’s value lies in the coaching staff he could bring with him to an NFL team. In the specific case of the Giants, his defensive coordinator hire would be just as important as any new personnel that is brought in on either side of the ball or a proverbial “culture change.”

If the Giants want to accelerate their push back toward playoff contention, Harbaugh should be on their radar. If he wants back into the NFL, the Giants should be on his radar.
