Assuming he can bounce back in 2020, these teams need to call Josh Gordon
1. Green Bay Packers
How neat would it be for Gordon to go from catching balls from Tom Brady to hauling in heaters from Aaron Rodgers?
It’d be fun for the NFL, too. Rodgers has gone stretches without Davante Adams this season as the No. 1 receiver battles turf toe. Despite a plethora of unproven talent behind Adams, Rodgers has made do, and threw for 429 yards and five scores in Week 7’s romp over Oakland.
Four of Green Bay’s frequently contributing receivers are 6’3″ or taller, and Adams isn’t really lacking for stature at 6’1″. In other words, Rodgers favors bigger targets, which is precisely what Gordon is.
But none of those players boast the athleticism Gordon does. As trade rumors swirl around Cincinnati’s A.J. Green, former Packers tight end Mark Chmura recently advocated for the team to trade for the Bengals All-Pro.
Instead of sacrificing draft capital to land a player in Green who’s missed the entire year due to injury, it might be more appealing for Green Bay to take a flier on someone like Gordon.
When Gordon arrived in New England, it was from an in-season trade, albeit earlier than this would be. He nevertheless managed to pick up the thick Patriots playbook well enough to contribute 720 yards receiving in 11 games last year.
Despite sitting pretty at 6-1, the Packers could use an extra edge. New Orleans has matched their record, and San Francisco is 6-0, so the battle for a first-round postseason bye should be extremely tight.
Plus, the Saints had Drew Brees return to practice Wednesday, and he said he hopes to play in Week 8, per ESPN.com’s Mike Triplett. Meanwhile, the 49ers dealt for a receiver upgrade of their own in Emmanuel Sanders.
It’d make a lot of sense for Green Bay to follow suit and acquire Gordon once he’s released.
