5 possible landing spots for Cam Newton in 2020
2. Denver Broncos
The Joe Flacco Experience feels sure to be a one year thing in Denver, if it even lasts this entire season uninterrupted when or if rookie Drew Lock is healthy and deemed ready to play. There is the small matter of the former Super Bowl MVP’s contract, with cap hits north of $23 million each of the next two seasons. But the dead money hits for 2020 and 2021 total $23.8 million if he is cut, and if an upgrade can be had the Broncos might consider eating that money with $63.5 million in cap space for next year right now.
In freshly anointed No.1 wide receiver Courtland Sutton (after this week’s trade of Emmanuel Sanders), the running back tandem of Phillip Lindsay and Royce Freeman and rookie tight end Noah Fant, the Broncos have some interesting young pieces to surround a quarterback with. If Lock is not considered ready to take over in 2020, maybe John Elway considers making a trade for Newton as a one-year bridge (or more than that). If nothing else, Elway likes big quarterbacks, to a fault, and Newton fits that bill.
Mike Freeman of Bleacher Report passed along the belief from an anonymous AFC general manager, with inherent health concerns mentioned as well, that as many as 10 teams would be interested in trading for Newton should he be available. Could Elway have been that general manager? Regardless, Denver stands as a potential destination for Newton next year.
