Dan’s Dumpster Dives: FanDuel NBA value plays

Bobby Portis — FanDuel $5000

Portis (pictured above) is terrifying. I’m sure you heard the story awhile back where he punched his teammate Niko Mirotich in the face and broke his jaw. Now he’s on the New York Knicks and I think they’re trying to put up some weird tough guy front on that team? I’m not sure. It’s odd because they’re really just not very good. Portis comes in at the very max of what we can consider a value play and I think he’s possibly in consideration if you want to save salary at center on FanDuel. Chicago is playing pretty fast and they’re terrible on defense. They do have some of my favorite young players like Wendell Carter Jr. and Markannan but they can’t defend Bobby Portis if he wants to try and score in the paint. I think he’ll have plenty of opportunities to clean up the boards as well assuming he gets minutes. I think it’s reasonable to project Portis for roughly 30 minutes and roughly 25 fantasy points on FanDuel which gets us to our magical 5x number.

Aron Baynes — FanDuel $4800

This feels weird to say but the Phoenix Suns look halfway decent and they’re kind of fun to watch. The Jazz are looking to potentially be the best team in the West in the regular season so this game could potentially get out of hand but the Suns have been scrappy. I think Baynes brings a toughness to them which they’ll need on the interior against the Stifle Tower Rudy Gobert. Gobert is probably the best and most impactful team defender in the NBA. We know that. What you may not realize is that when a guy goes up to block a shot, he often leaves his man open to either get an easy loop around pass for a layup/dunk. Also, a prolific shot blocker will often leave their man to block a shot leaving their man unboxed and unbothered to get easy offensive rebounds and putbacks. I’m not saying these things will definitely happen because Gobert is a smart defensive player but I don’t think you should just rule someone out who is going against him. If you need to save money at center, Baynes could definitely be your guy.
