Close lines and home underdogs stand out in the early odds for Week 9 of the 2019 NFL season.

Now that the 2019 NFL season has edged past its halfway point, the contenders, pretenders and the inconsequential are starting to define themselves. As is typical of most seasons, there are far more middle-of-the-pack teams than there are heavy favorites and basement-dwellers, which means a heavy slate of close betting lines for Week 9’s games.

As of Sunday evening, only the Buffalo Bills are double-digit points favorites, as they are set to face hapless Washington. Even the undefeated San Francisco 49ers and New England Patriots haven’t been given such a large advantage so far.

Most everything is in the one-score range, either a touchdown or a field goal. This will obviously fluctuate throughout the week, but it is an indicator that there’s a whole lot of middle ground in the NFL right now. That also means ample opportunities for many teams to start to differentiate themselves.

The most stunning development is that there isn’t a lot of early confidence in a number of home teams; many are slight underdogs or very marginal favorites to start the week.
