PGA: WGC-HSBC Champions Course Breakdown and Picks

ADAM SCOTT

Adam gets the slight price drop this week after a few abysmal showings coming in at T33 at Zozo. Rather than play in Korea at the CJ Cup two weeks ago, Scott elected to play at the Japan Open for the second straight year seemingly trying to get comfortable with his surroundings ahead of the ZoZo where he finished at a disappointing T5 behind Chan Kim. He is looking for that elusive win which seems to have been evading him of late, even so, and regardless, he has shown proficiency gaining +2.7 SG APP, +1.8 ARG and +2.6 putting with his broomstick style putter in the last 5 events. Adam ranks 4th in SG Approach among his peers and most recently 6th in 3 putt avoidance. Compiling everything together, I have him ranked 2nd in my initial models for the HSBC.

PATRICK REED

Captain America had a quiet week in Japan struggling for two rounds before carding in a 65 and a 68 on Saturday and Sunday. It’s the first instance that we see Patrick since the Tour Championship, so knocking some rust off might have done him some good. Patrick is one of the most prolific long iron strikers in the game, in his previous 10 rounds he has gained 4.6 Strokes Tee to Green. In the 3 putt avoidance department, he comes in the top ten among the field and is currently ranked 8th in Strokes OTT. Looking further into his game, where Reed shows the most poise and excellence is on the Bentgrass green variety which sees him gaining ~50% more Strokes Putting vs any other grass type. I see him as a Bentgrass specialist, I drafted him last week, and he will be in strong considerations again.

TYRELL HATTON

My personal favorite hothead that wears his heart on his sleeve the entire round. The nice thing about Tyrrell is he will tell you how his shot will turn out before the ball has even landed. All jokes aside, Hatton took a small break after taking a cool T6 finish in Jeju Island where he gained 8.2 SG Total. We don’t have the raw SG Data from that tournament but looking at his last 24 rounds, Hatton is ranked 5th in GIR Gained and 11th in SG Approach. Simply put, he is a green finder, and we need our guys on the putting surface and putting for birdie. Those who have faired well at Sheshan have avoided the big scramble and put themselves in a position to make birdie. Look for another strong showing from Hatton this week.
