Fantasy football lineup advice: Week 9 boom or bust
Quarterback
Boom: Gardner Minshew, JAX vs. HOU
“Minshew Mania” has gained some steam in recent weeks, as he’s posted 21 or more fantasy points in three of his last four games. Last week, the sixth-round signal-caller feasted on the Jets’ secondary, throwing for 279 yards and three touchdowns, showcasing the budding connection between he and his talented young WR corps. Even with Nick Foles set to return in the near future, this looks like Minshew’s job to keep with how well he’s performed.
Expect him to continue his impressive rookie campaign against a weak Texans’ secondary. This team has struggled against the pass all season, yielding 23.2 fantasy points per game to the quarterback spot (fourth-most in the NFL). Houston also just lost J.J. Watt for the season, something that should buy Minshew more time in the pocket this week. Fire him up into your lineups with confidence.
Bust: Carson Wentz, PHI vs. CHI
One of my favorite offseason picks to outperform his draft stock, Wentz has merely been a fringe-worthy starting option in the first-half of 2019. The former MVP candidate currently sits as just the overall QB12 on the year, and while his recent schedule hasn’t made life easy for him, his play has been frustrating for owners to say the least. Even in a blowout victory versus the Bills last week, Wentz managed just 14.4 fantasy points.
He’ll encounter yet another brutal matchup this week with the Bears coming to town. While Chicago’s interior has been susceptible to the run as of late, they’ve remained a superior defense against the pass. On the season, they’ve ceded only 15.1 FPPG to quarterbacks, sixth-fewest in the NFL. Wentz gets a slight boost if Desean Jackson is able to return, but by no means is he a safe option.
Sleeper: Sam Darnold, NJY @ MIA
Things were beginning to look better for Darnold after impressing in Week 6 against the Cowboys (19.6 fantasy points), but since then, he’s been an utter disaster. Over the last two weeks, Darnold has mustered just 5.9 combined points, but draws a get-right matchup this week against the Dolphins. Miami is without a doubt the worst team in the NFL, and their 23.1 FPPG given up to enemy passers backs that notion.
