5 possible replacements for Jets coach Adam Gase
Jay Gruden
Jay Gruden is another known commodity, and he qualifies as a legitimate candidate for the New York Jets, especially since Woody Johnson and the organization can’t be completely trusted to make the best possible hire.
And Gruden would not be the best possible hire by any means. His time with the Washington Redskins ended in disaster, with rumors bubbling that he never wanted the team to draft Dwayne Haskins; hence why he refused to start him over the crumbling Case Keenum.
Gruden is a mediocre head coach with no real track record of success, other than the success ascribed to him based on the Super Bowl his brother won years ago. But big names move the meter, and Jay Gruden counts as a big name. The Jets will be better off looking elsewhere, but don’t be surprised if they end up tricking themselves into thinking Gruden can be the one to help turn Darnold into a star quarterback.
Eric Bieniemy
The Jets would probably be best off going with an exciting hire with a background in coach on offense, and if they feel like dipping into the college ranks for Lincoln Riley is too risky, then Eric Bieniemy could be an ideal option.
He is the Kansas City Chiefs offensive coordinator under Andy Reid, and while it’s never easy to tell how much of the team’s success to ascribe to an offense-minded head coach or his offensive coordinator, Bieniemy has seemingly done an ingenious job of navigating the Chiefs offense this season.
Bieniemy has ensured that the Chiefs offense isn’t missing a beat despite not having Patrick Mahomes in the lineup, as Matt Moore kept the pace with Aaron Rodgers on Sunday Night Football before doing enough to beat the Minnesota Vikings in Week 9. At 50 years old, the former running back has been a key part of the Chiefs success under Mahomes since becoming the team’s offensive coordinator in 2018.
While Bieniemy isn’t as big of a name as the others on the list, based on the Kansas City offense’s success over the past two seasons, he has a much better recent track record in the NFL than any of the other candidates. He could be a fantastic hire for the Jets, even if more people know who Mike McCarthy and Jay Gruden are. Bieniemy likely has fresh ideas for an evolving NFL, and it would be a disappointment if he weren’t strongly considered.
