Florida State football: 5 replacements for Willie Taggart
1. Bob Stoops – Retired former Oklahoma head coach
Florida State still fancies itself as one of the premier programs in college football. As such, it’s no surprise to see at least one huge name pop up on this list. Bob Stoops would certainly qualify as a splashy hire.
Stoops is currently the head coach and general manager of the XFL’s Dallas Renegades, but it would be very difficult for him to say no to the right college job. He may have left Oklahoma under questionable circumstances, but he has a lengthy resume of powering programs to national championship games. That includes a stint with Florida as an assistant coach where he built a ferocious defense for the Gators.
This Stoops is a classic example of a feast or famine hire for Florida State. It’s easy to envision a scenario where he takes charge of the moribund program and turns them into the same sort of powerhouse Oklahoma was during his tenure. It’s also easy to imagine him struggling to muster the energy required to rebuild a program with this many current challenges.
That risk factor won’t stop the Seminoles from making Stoops their top target. Hiring him would immediately reenergize the school’s fan base, and perhaps more importantly, their donor base. Look for Stoops rumors to dominate the FSU news cycle until they hire Taggart’s successor.
