Paris Saint-Germain can become the first team to advance to the Champions League knockout stage on Wednesday when they play Club Brugge at the Parc des Princes. The two clubs played 15 days ago with PSG winning 5-0. PSG are first in Group A with nine points, five points ahead of second-place Real Madrid. Brugge are third in the group with two points.
Despite losing their most recent game to Dijon, Paris Saint-Germain hold a seven-point lead over Angers in the Ligue 1 table. The French side have won six of the past seven Ligue 1 titles, but in the Champions League, the club has been extremely disappointing.
However, through three games this season, PSG have looked dominant. In their three group stage games, PSG have outscored opponents 9-0. The results for PSG are even more impressive considering that many of the club’s best players did not play in their first three games because of a combination of injuries and suspensions. In the first game against Brugge, Mauro Icardi, Kylian Mbappe and Angel Di Maria were incredible. Di Maria assisted on four goals, two by Mbappe and two from Icardi in the victory. The trio will likely be given the chance to repeat their success from the first game in the reverse fixture.
Club Brugge’s loss to PSG was their first loss in any competition this season. Manager Philippe Clement’s team is first in the Jupiler Pro League and will look to improve on their previous game against PSG. Clement’s team has been offensively prolific domestically but in the Champions League against significantly bigger clubs, their aggressive attacking style leaves them vulnerable defensively. While they are still alive in the race for the knockout stage, it is unlikely that they finish ahead of Real Madrid. Instead, Brugge will focus on finishing third and qualifying for the Europa League.
