2019 NFL power rankings, Week 11: Steelers jumping, Chiefs slumping
Recap: For the second time in seven days, the Giants would be playing a game at MetLife Stadium. Only this time around, Pat Shurmur’s club would be the “road” as the team squared off with the New York Jets. It was business as usual for the Big Blue as rookie quarterback Daniel Jones wound up throwing for 308 yards and four touchdowns, the final score giving his team a 27-21 third-quarter lead. But the young performer was also sacked six times and had three of the team’s four fumbles – one of those taken back for a score by the Jets’ Jamal Adams. The Giants coughed up the football two more times in the seven-point loss, raising their total to 24 turnovers in 10 games.
Next Week: Big Blue won’t be in action this Sunday. However, when Shurmur’s team takes the field again it will be at storied Soldier Field against the Chicago Bears. The clubs collided a year ago at MetLife Stadium (Week 13) and New York wound up prevailing in overtime, 30-27. It’s the Giants’ first appearance in the Windy City since 2013.
Playoff hopes: Mistakes continue to plague Shurmur’s squad as the Giants saw its current losing streak extended to six games. Jones remains a work in progress and while there has been signs of promise, the combination of miscues along with one of the worst defensive units in the league is a combination that doesn’t add up to success.
Recap: Last week, Adam Gase’s team became the first victim of the Miami Dolphins in 2019. Now the Green and White took on the rival New York Giants, who were in the midst of a five-game losing streak. Gregg Williams’ defense did allowed Giants’ quarterback Daniel Jones to throw for 308 yards and four scores. But the Jets also sacked the rookie six times and forced him into three fumbles – including a strip by safety Jamal Adams, who retuned the prize 25 yards for a score. Meanwhile, Sam Darnold played turnover-free football, throwing for 230 yards and one score and running for another. The Jets scored the final 13 points of the game to get the win.
Next Week: The Jets make their first appearance at FedExField since 2011 as this interconference series with the Washington Redskins is renewed for the first time since 2015. Four years ago at MetLife Stadium, the ‘Skins fell to the Green and White, 34-20. Washington has dropped the last two games in this setting dating back to ’11.
Playoff hopes: There’s still a lot of football to be played and it will be interesting to see if Gase’s team can build on just its second win of the season. The problem is that the Jets have a lot of teams to climb over in the conference, including two in their own division. The club has its many issues but may be suited to play spoiler down the stretch.
