Fantasy Football – Tight End

Boom: Jared Cook, NO @ TB

It’s taken more time than anticipated, but now that Cook is fully integrated into New Orleans’ offense, he’s finally taken over the role the Saints signed him for. Over his past three games he’s played in, he’s posted fantasy scores of 14.1, 12.7, and 13.4. When Brees took back over under center against the Falcons, Cook secured six passes for 74 yards (both season-highs). Brees’ return adds value to all of the Saints’ pass-catchers, including Cook, who should start to come on down the stretch.

Working as his quarterback’s check-down option underneath the coverage, Cook will again see solid volume. This figures to be a high-scoring game, and with Tampa Bay ranking as fantasy’s second-worst defense against tight ends, Cook should thrive. The Bucs’ 695 yards allowed to the position are the most in the league, so fire him up as a top-5 option this week.

Honorable Mention: Greg Olsen (CAR vs. ATL), Mark Andrews (BAL vs. HOU)

Bust: Noah Fant, DEN @ MIN

While Jacob Hollister was an exception against the Niners, more often than not, tight ends without a track record of success don’t see back-to-back productive weeks. This point should hold true with Fant, who owners will undoubtedly be taking a flier on this week after erupting for 20.5 fantasy points against the Browns in his last matchup. He may have a higher ceiling with Brandon Allen at QB, but even against Cleveland, a 75-yard touchdown severely skewed his line.

On the season, Fant still has caught three or fewer passes in all but two games, making him extremely difficult to trust. This becomes especially the case against the Vikings defense, who play exceptional defense at home. In total, Minnesota ranks middle-of-the-pack against TEs, but still has yet to allow even a single touchdown to the position this season. Don’t get too cute here. Fant should be far away from any starting lineups.

Dishonorable Mention: O.J. Howard (TB vs. NO), Dallas Goedert (PHI vs. NE)

Sleeper: T.J. Hockenson, DET vs. DAL

Ever since Hockenson’s 131-yard showing in Week 1, owners have been patiently waiting for that next big game. It’s taken longer than expected, but he’s been more involved as of late, drawing six and seven targets in his last two contests. Dallas has been prone to allowing big weeks to enemy TEs, surrendering 16.1 FPPG.
