3. Washington Redskins

The Redskins surprised absolutely no one by firing Jay Gruden in-season, and Bill Callahan has been serving as interim head coach. The team has been a bit more competitive in some games lately, but easier opponents is the best explanation for that.

Way back when, a lone season in 2002 to be exact before he took the Bengals’ job, Lewis was the defensive coordinator in Washington under Steve Spurrier. So he’s got some familiarity to and with owner Dan Snyder, for better or worse as he considers the head coaching opportunities that may come his way. The outwardly mild-mannered Lewis may simply want no part of the ongoing dysfunction of the organization, assuming he has other options. If the Redskins become his only serious head coaching option, waiting another year or taking a coordinator post are real possibilities.

There’s a non-zero chance Callahan simply has the interim tag taken off after the season, and he’ll be the Redskins’ head coach next year. But Lewis should at least be a candidate for the job at this point in time, under the assumption of a real head coaching search to come in Washington.
