2019 NFL power rankings, Week 13: Jets soar, Eagles grounded
Recap: For the third consecutive game, the Jaguars would face an AFC South rival as they headed to Nashville. Back in Week 3 on a Thursday night at home, Doug Marrone’s teams came away with a 20-7 win and were now in position to sweep the Titans for the first time since 2005. But if it’s Tennessee it means another clash with running back Derrick Henry, who once again had his way with the Jacksonville defense as Marrone’s team allowed a whopping 219 yards rushing and wound up losing by at least 20 points for the third consecutive game. Running back Leonard Fournette ran for 97 yards and two scores and added 62 yards on nine catches in a losing effort.
Next Week: The Jaguars host the Tampa Bay Buccaneers for the first time since 2011 and the fourth time overall as these interconference foes battle for only the seventh time. Jacksonville owns a 3-0 home record in this series and rolled to a 41-14 victory in 2011. But the Bucs won at home in 2015, 38-31, in the teams’ most recent meeting.
Playoff hopes: There are numerous reasons that the once-promising Jaguars are suddenly riding a three-game losing streak. And while Marrone and the club opted to replace Gardner Minshew with Foles, perhaps the real issues reside on the defensive side of the ball. Suddenly the Jaguars are the only team in the AFC South below .500.
Recap: If a number of things went wrong on Sunday, the Buccaneers would be officially eliminated it from the playoffs. So Bruce Arians’ club traveled to Atlanta to take on the Falcons and his squad awoke in a big way thanks to an offense that rolled up 446 total yards. Jameis Winston was not sacked and while he was picked off twice in the first half, he also threw three touchdown passes over that span and finished with 313 yards through the air. Wideout Chris Godwin totaled seven grabs for 184 yards and two of those scores. Tampa’s defense sacked Matt Ryan six times and forced him into two turnovers – including a fumble returned for a score by Ndamukong Suh.
Next Week: The Bucs head to Jacksonville for the first time since 2011 as these franchises clash for only the seventh time. While the Jaguars own a 4-2 lifetime lead in the standings in a short-lived series that dates back to 1995, the Buccaneers emerged with an exciting 38-31 victory four years ago at Raymond James Stadium.
Playoff hopes: Just when it appeared Arians’ team was ready to fade away, the Bucs came up with an impressive win and it was more decisive than the final score may indicate. Of course, Winston’s play and the club’ third road of the season were once again indicative of the recent inconsistency that has plagued a fairly talented team.
