2019 NFL power rankings, Week 13: Jets soar, Eagles grounded
Recap: Adam Gase’s club was looking at for its third consecutive win as the rejuvenated Oakland Raiders arrived at MetLife Stadium on Sunday. And Gregg Williams’ defensive unit as well as quarterback Sam Darnold and the New York offense made surprisingly easy work of the Silver and Black as the Raiders was limited to 208 total yards and a field goal while the Jets forced two turnovers. Darnold would throw for 315 yards and two touchdowns and also ran for another score and nine different players caught passes. Gase’s squad scored exactly 34 points for the third straight game and have totaled more points over that stretch (102) than they did in their first eight outings (96).
Next Week: The Jets make their way to the Queen City for the first time since 2013 as these clubs meet for the first time since the Bengals prevailed, 23-22, at MetLife Stadium on the opening Sunday of the 2016 season. And the Jets’ last appearance in Cincinnati was also less than memorable as the team was embarrassed, 49-9, six years ago.
Playoff hopes: It’s an AFC that could send a 9-7 or 8-8 team to the postseason. And give credit where it’s due as the Jets have gathered themselves and reeled off three straight victories. Darnold is spreading the football around but it was New York’s defense that was the story vs. the Raiders. This is suddenly a club with a little momentum.
Recap: The Eagles’ offense was lifeless last week in the 17-10 setback to the New England Patriots. Now Doug Pederson’s club looks as the defensively-challenged Seahawks arrived in Philadelphia. And for the second straight Sunday, the Eagles played sloppy football as quarterback Carson Wentz threw for 256 yards but was also sacked three time and had four of the team’s five turnovers thanks to a pair of interceptions and two lost fumbles. Tight end Zach Ertz totaled a dozen receptions for 91 yards and Philadelphia’s only touchdown, which came with 20 seconds left in the game. The Eagles sacked Russell Wilson six times and forced two turnovers but failed to win.
Next Week: The Birds and Miami Dolphins collide for the first time since 2015 when Philadelphia fell short at home, 20-19, four seasons ago. Prior to that, the Eagles had prevailed in the previous three meetings between the clubs. Philadelphia has won two straight at Miami after dropping their previous five road games in this series.
Playoff hopes: It was an extremely disappointing day for the Birds as they kept Wilson and the Seattle offense in check but spent the afternoon shooting themselves in the cleats. It’s a football team certainly not firing on all cylinders and the absences on offense play a part in those issues. But Pederson’s club is real head-scratcher.
