And we have reached the greatest disappointment in college football this season and it isn’t particularly close. We all thought that the Texas Longhorns were back. They won the Sugar Bowl over a disinterested Georgia Bulldogs team last January. After a 10-win season under second-year head coach Tom Herman, Texas was poised to contend for the Big 12 title until the team didn’t.

Texas will host the in-state rival Texas Tech Red Raiders on Friday afternoon to hopefully get to 7-5 to improve the quality of the meaningless bowl game the Longhorns will play in. They should win this game, as Texas Tech is in its first year with a new coaching staff under Matt Wells and won’t be going bowling this year at 4-7 through 11 games. But Texas should be so much better.

Texas does have to decent wins on the season in Big 12 play over the Oklahoma State Cowboys and the Kansas State Wildcats. Losing at home to the undefeated LSU Tigers isn’t the end of the world either. However, not beating the Oklahoma Sooners, the Baylor Bears, the Iowa State Cyclones and the TCU Horned Frogs tells you everything you need to know about Texas football.

Simply put, programs like Oklahoma, Baylor and Iowa State are in a different class than Texas at this time, most likely due to coaching. Herman was supposed to be the answer in Austin, but if he can’t hang with the likes of Lincoln Riley, Matt Rhule or Matt Campbell, the Longhorn Faithful could turn on him quickly. At least he beat Mike Gundy and Chris Klieman this year, but Texas isn’t back.
