Power ranking the NHL’s alternate jerseys for the 2019-20 season
By Kyle McKenna
14. Carolina Hurricanes
The Carolina Hurricanes could and should have been one of the first teams to hop on the black third jersey bandwagon during the mid-to-late 1990s.
After relocating from Hartford in 1997, Carolina didn’t unveil a black third jersey until the 2008-09 campaign. While most fans appreciate and prefer the organization’s Hartford Whalers sweaters prior to its move to North Carolina, the Hurricanes have had commendable uniforms more times than not.
The team’s second alternate jersey in team history, which was introduced last season, isn’t bad by any means.
Carolina has followed through with some brand modifications over the last handful of seasons, and this sweater is aimed for a modern appearance rather than a traditional hockey sweater fans are exposed to in the NHL.
The sweater portrays a unique appearance, especially with the team’s latest secondary logo of the warning-flag hockey stick as the primary crest on the sweater. You’re not seeing things either – the logo is larger than most primary logos on sweaters.
The secondary logo itself was updated from the original version, which was utilized from the team’s inception in 1997.
Fans should appreciate the fact that Hurricanes wanted to incorporate a regional tribute to the sweater’s design, but the stormed-theme shoulder yokes are questionable as are the red outlines around the gray.
Similar to Tampa’s sweater, this design would thrive more so if the color white was utilized more and somewhere else other than for the number’s filling.
The numbers pop on this jersey – and if there was a hint of white added perhaps this alternate would rank higher for our countdown.
