5 potential candidates to replace Steve Addazio at Boston College
1. Mike Elko, Texas A&M Defensive Coordinator
Elko is about to complete his second season as defensive coordinator under Jimbo Fisher at Texas A&M, and after turning around the Aggies’ defense in 2018 he signed a three-year contract extension that made him one of just four defensive coordinators in the country making $2 million a year.
Texas A&M then went from 47th in the country in scoring defense last year (25.3 point per game) to tied for 36th to this point this year (22.7 points per game). They also maintained top-32 rankings in total and rush defense, while improving from 98th in pass defense last year to tied for 46th this year. So Fisher surely wants to keep him around, but Elko should get some interest in head coaching jobs and the right opportunity (such as he may define it) would be hard to turn down.
Elko is a disciple of Dave Clawson, following him from being the defensive coordinator at Bowling Green (2009-2013) to Wake Forest in the same post from 2014-2016. So he’s got some familiarity with ACC football, and one season at Notre Dame (2017) gave him some experience at a Catholic school with high academic standards.
After the Eagles dropped off rather substantially defensively this year, finding someone who help bring things back to at least a respectable level on that side of the ball stands to weed out some candidates. Elko should sit prominently on any list of candidates to replace Steve Addazio, as someone with that defensive ilk and a solid track record.
