5 candidates to replace Matt Luke at Ole Miss
1. Mike Leach, Washington State head coach
Leach was a rumored candidate at Tennessee a couple of years ago and may have taken the job if it had been offered. He’s nearing the end of somewhat of a down year at Washington State, with a 6-6 record (3-6 in Pac-12 play) after an 11-win campaign in 2018, so maybe if an opportunity to exit comes he’d take it.
It’s fun to imagine Leach’s high-flying Air Raid offense invading the SEC, not to mention a brighter light being shone on his unique (at times abrasive) personality and quirky perspective of the world. Les Miles had plenty of quirks and viral press conference clips during his tenure at LSU, but Leach would be on a whole other level.
As Dennis Dodd of CBS Sports pointed to, from Lubbock (Texas Tech) to Pullman (Wazzu) Leach seems to gravitate toward smaller college towns. Oxford would fit that template nicely if the opportunity were out there for him at Ole Miss.
Leach might be the kind of marquee hire Ole Miss is looking for if they really want to shake things up and rattle the Saban-esque foundations of the SEC. And if his track record is any indication, he would bring results pretty quickly doing it precisely his way.
