1. New York Giants

Pat Shurmur is simply not head coach material, with a 7-21 record over two seasons with the Giants and a 16-44 mark over four seasons as a full-time head man. He and general manager David Gettleman are in line to survive the entire season. But changes are in line to come.

As Gettleman surely angles to save his own job, Rivera has practically fallen into his lap. Gettleman was the Panthers’ general manager from 2013-2017, assembling a team Rivera led to the Super Bowl in 2015. Ex-Panthers offensive coordinator Mike Shula, who Rivera was fiercely loyal to almost to a fault, occupies the same post with the Giants right now. The fit for Rivera in New York may be perfect, with his defensive background to help a flailing unit.

Head coaching hires around the league have moved toward offensive minds in recent years, and the Giants have put a tentative foot on that bandwagon twice with the hirings of Shurmur and his predecessor Ben McAdoo. So maybe it’s time to go the opposite direction, and hire someone with a good resume and a background on the defensive side of the ball. The next head coach of your New York Giants is… Ron Rivera? It’s almost too perfect.
