2019 NFL power rankings, Week 15: 49ers impress, Patriots depressed
Recap: Winners of two consecutive games, the Redskins made their way to Lambeau field for the first time since 2013 hoping to surprise Aaron Rodgers and the first-place Packers. Rookie quarterback Dwayne Haskins threw for 170 yards and one score to go along with one interception. But he was also sacked four times as the Washington offense finished with just 262 total yards. Rookie wideout Terry McLaurin also continues to impress and he and Haskins connected on a 13-yard score with 1:17 to play that gave the ‘Skins a shot late in the fourth quarter. But the Redskins failed to recover an onside kick and the team has lost at least 10 games for the first time since 2014.
Next Week: The ‘Skins are back at home and welcome the Philadelphia Eagles to FedExField looking to snap a five-game losing streak in this divisional rivalry. In Week 1 at Lincoln Financial Field, Washington owned a 17-0 lead in the second quarter but eventually succumbed, 32-27. The Redskins are 0-3 vs. their NFC East rivals this year.
Draft Talk: The ‘Skins did have an outside shot at winning the NFC East if they could come up with a third straight victory. Instead, the franchise will miss out on the postseason party for the fourth consecutive year. Hawkins has shown great promise as the season has worn on and it’s a matter of getting him more help via April’s draft.
Recap: On the verge of playoff elimination and coming off a disappointing loss to the then-winless Bengals, Adam Gase’s club hosted the Miami Dolphins and were looking to avoid being swept by their AFC East rival for the third time in four years. In Week 9 at South Florida, Gase’s team was also the ‘Fins’ first victim of the season (26-18) and the Jets would be without running back Le’Veon Bell for this rematch. Sam Darnold led an offense that totaled 274 yards and he would throw for 270 yards and two touchdowns albeit one interception. New York’s defense kept the Dolphins out of the end zone all afternoon. And Sam Ficken’s clutch 44-yard field goal at the gun won the game.
Next Week: Gase’s club makes the short trip to Baltimore to take on the first-place Ravens on Thursday night. The teams last met in 2016 and the Jets came away with a 24-16 win. New York snapped an eight-game losing streak in the series via that victory. But the Green and White owns a 0-5 road record in this setting dating back to 2000.
Draft Talk: The Jets still had and outside shot at a playoff berth entering Sunday’s late action. But road wins by the Steelers and Titans ended the Green and White’s postseason aspirations. It’s a team with some promising pieces and perhaps a second year with Gase would help. This team could use some more talent on the offensive line.
