Alexander Volkanovski: Playing the spoiler

Alexander Volkanovski is walking into UFC 245 ready to spoil Max Holloway’s run as featherweight champion. Holloway has been on a tear through the division; where he has not loss since 2013 at the hands of Conor McGregor. Holloway has many considering that he may be the greatest featherweight champion of all time, but that conversation is still up for debate at the same time. Volkanovski is looking to ruin all of that in one fell swoop.

The New South Wales native is a competitor that mainstream fans may not recognize. Since joining the UFC back in 2016, he hasn’t been as outspoken as other fighters in the division. But what he has done is win convincingly every time he steps into the Octagon. His last three victories over Jose Aldo, Chad Mendes and Darren Elkins opened the eyes to many that he’s a true threat to Holloway’s run as champ.

Holloway is known as a volume striker who frequently overwhelms his opponents. That is what makes Volkanovski such an intriguing opponent because he’s been able to negate aggressive opponents while thwarting takedowns at the same time. He’s five inches shorter than Holloway but has a three-inch reach advantage – so expect him to want to control the range for much of this bout. There’s the age old saying that “styles make fights” and this pairing between Holloway and Volkanovski is a clear example of why the premise is so intriguing.
