Germaine de Randamie: Should she be in the title picture?

Germaine de Randamie heads into UFC with revenge and opportunity right in front of her. She’s facing off against Amanda Nunes, double champion and arguably the greatest women’s fighter of all time. De Randamie is an accomplished with nearly 50 kickboxing bouts on her resume. She’s shown the ability to dispatch an opponent quickly. She’s a threat to the champion and one that Nunes is recognizing as such. However, the larger question is whether she would be the type of champion that the UFC requires.

A victory on Saturday would not be de Randamie’s first taste of UFC gold. Back at UFC 208 she defeated Holly Holm to become the company’s first featherweight champion. She held that title for a little more than four months when she was stripped for not defending the title. At the time, Cris Cyborg was the top 145-pound fighter available and de Randamie had her own reasons for not wanting to fight Cyborg. Fans and media members alike criticized her for the stance she took, and that storyline hasn’t been ignored heading into this fight.

De Randamie could walk out of the T-Mobile Arena with the bantamweight title around her waist. The immediate question that should follow is whether she’s willing to take on all challengers, regardless of her personal feelings about said competitor.
