2020 NFL mock draft: Tua Tagovailoa lands with Chargers
By Brad Weiss
The New York Jets picked up a win this past weekend, though they needed every bit of time to come away with the small victory over the Miami Dolphins. It took a Sam Frickle field goal at the end of regulation to get the job done, and in a year of disappointments, at least they were able to split against the lowly Dolphins.
This season was filled with expectations at the beginning, as they brought in a new head coach in Adam Gase, and added some key players on both sides of the ball via free agency. Guys like running back Le’Veon Bell and linebacker C.J. Mosley were supposed to help this team catch the New England Patriots in the AFC East, but instead, injuries and inconsistent football have derailed the season.
Looking ahead to the 2020 NFL Draft, the Jets have to do something about the offensive line, which is why Tristan Wirfs from Iowa would be a nice get at No. 9 overall. Quarterback Sam Darnold has proven that he can be a franchise guy in New York, but if they can’t do a better job protecting him, it could end up being a disaster for this organization in the long run.
The Los Angeles Chargers actually came to play in Week 14, as they put 45 points on the Jacksonville Jaguars in their AFC matchup. Quarterback Philip Rivers turned back the clock, leading the Chargers to the blowout victory, but he has proven in recent weeks that his best years are certainly behind him.
As the franchise looks for his successor, they could end up with one of the premier quarterback prospects in next April’s NFL Draft. Tua Tagovailoa was long considered the consensus No. 1 overall pick, but he has battled through injuries this season, including what could have been a devastating hip injury a few weeks back.
Still, if he decides to declare for the NFL, he is going to be a first round pick, and would be a solid fit for these Chargers as they enter their new building. This is an organization that needs fans, and some star power, and adding a talent like Tagovailoa could help them accomplish both of those things in 2020 and beyond.
