Could Bryant end up in Hollywood?

The Dodgers have been linked top third base free agents Anthony Rendon and Josh Donaldson, as president of baseball operations Andrew Friedman has shown the Dodgers may be willing to spend on top free agents. However, despite Friedman’s newfound desire to spend money in free agency, the Dodgers may prefer to spend money elsewhere and trade from their fifth-ranked farm system.

Infielder Gavin Lux and right-hander Dustin May top the Dodgers’ farm system, with Lux ranked the second overall prospect out of MLB Pipeline’s top 100 prospects. Bryant’s defensive flexibility would help manager Dave Roberts get creative should the Dodgers keep Justin Turner on the roster in a more limited role.

Other prospects like shortstop Jeter Downs or starter Josiah Gray could interest the Cubs as well, but with Dodgers having only two players signed through 2021 there is a ton of space on the LA books. And while Freidman doesn’t love spending big on top free agents, giving up so much prospect capital to the Cubs for Bryant only makes sense if they’ve missed out on Rendon and Donaldson.
