5 dark horse picks to challenge for 2020 Heisman Trophy
1. Bo Nix, Auburn QB
- 2019 Stats: 200-351, 2366 yards, 15 TDs
- 91 attempts, 301 yards, 7 TDs
With Burrow and Tagovailoa both going to the NFL after this season, maybe Auburn could take the SEC West in 2020. And if that is the case, Bo Nix will need to take the leap as a sophomore.
Nix was thrown into the fire during his freshman season, and although he had his struggles, he did help guide Auburn to a 9-3 record amidst a grueling schedule. The schedule is rough again in 2020, but if Nix takes the necessary steps forward, he could put Auburn in contention for the SEC Championship.
Auburn also just hired Chad Morris to be the team’s offensive coordinator. Although he was unsuccessful as a head coach at Arkansas, he is very familiar with the Gus Malzahn scheme. If that creates better comradery within the coaching staff, it will only benefit Nix and his development.
As we said, this is a quarterback award at the moment, so if you’re the signal-caller for a contending team, you’ve already got a significant advantage. Nix is another big recruit that came to Auburn with legacy ties and high expectations, if he lives up to them, Heisman isn’t out of the question.
