2019 NFL power rankings, Week 16: Cowboys won, 49ers stunned
Recap: It was a short week for Adam Gase’s club but the team didn’t have to travel far to take on the Ravens at Baltimore on Thursday night. But it wound up being a long night for the Jets’ defense as the Ravens rolled up 42 points, 218 yards on the ground and 430 yards of total offense. New York’s special teams kept the club in the game early on as Ty Montgomery, Braxton Berrios and Vyncint Smith gave Sam Darnold and the offense excellent field position on more than one occasion. But Gase’s club could never dig itself out of an early 13-0 first-quarter deficit and Gregg Williams’ defensive unit gave up five scores through the air via Ravens’ quarterback Lamar Jackson.
Next Week: The Green and White welcomes the Black and Gold to MetLife Stadium as the Steelers invade East Rutherford. The Jets have not had a lot of success in this series. Including a pair of playoff losses, the team is 5-20 lifetime vs. the Steelers. But the club came up with a 20-14 win in 2014 when last they played host in this setting.
Draft Talk: While the Jets could use some more playmakers for Darnold, the offensive line has to be a priority next April and general manager Joe Douglas may target this area more than once. The last time this unit was addressed in the first round was in 2006 with the selections of tackle D’Brickashaw Ferguson and center Nick Mangold.
Recap: The reeling Jaguars made their way to the Bay Area to take on the equally-struggling Oakland Raiders. Both clubs have had their issues as of late, losing their share of lopsided games. And it looked like it was going to be another long day for Doug Marrone’s club as the team was down 16-3 at intermission. But Jacksonville blanked the Raiders in the second half and rookie quarterback Gardner Minshew got hot in the fourth quarter and would throw a pair of touchdown passes in the last five-plus minutes – both to wide receiver Chris Conley – and the Jaguars ended a five-game losing streak. The promising prospect threw for 201 yards in the come-from-behind victory.
Next Week: The Jaguars make their way to Atlanta to clash with the Falcons in the regular season for only the seventh time in an interconference series that dates back to 1996. It’s all even in the standings between these clubs (3-3), but it’s worth noting that the Jaguars have dropped the last two meetings in this infrequent gathering.
Draft Talk: General manager David Caldwell and executive vice president of football operations Tom Coughlin have a lot of decisions to make this offseason. And thanks to the trade that sent Jalen Ramsey to the Rams, the Jaguars could have two selections in the Top 20 in April’s draft if Los Angeles fails to reach the playoffs this season.
