32. Arizona State Sun Devils, 84.24

  • Roster Strength: 86.61 (20)
  • Team Performance: 82.97 (42)
  • Head Coach Rating: 81.46 (64)

The Herm Edwards experiment hasn’t been perfect, but it certainly has not been the disaster many feared when Arizona State plucked the former NFL coach from the television studio ahead of the 2018 season. The Sun Devils spent several weeks ranked in the AP Top 25, and after a midseason swoon resulted in a four-game losing streak, Edwards led his squad to an upset victory over Oregon that knocked the Ducks out of the playoff race. More important to fans, Arizona State also beat Arizona to reclaim the Territorial Cup.

We may or may not see running back Eno Benjamin or receiver Brandon Aiyuk takes the field against Florida State in the Sun Bowl before turning pro, but the Sun Devils will feature one of the best young signal-callers in the country in true freshman Jayden Daniels.

31. Virginia Tech Hokies, 84.60

  • Roster Strength: 85.35 (28)
  • Team Performance: 82.73 (44)
  • Head Coach Rating: 82.39 (52)

Virginia Tech stumbled out of the game in 2019, losing to Boston College in the season opener and getting blown out by Duke three weeks later to start 0-2 in ACC play. But despite the rising temperature on head coach Justin Fuente’s seat, the Hokies responded to win six of their next seven games with the only blemish being a 21-20 loss to Notre Dame in South Bend.

Losing 39-30 to Virginia cost Tech a spot in the conference title game and ended the regular season on a sour note, but back-to-back shutouts over Georgia Tech and Pitt in the two weeks prior helped send retiring defensive coordinator Bud Foster out with fond memories. Foster, who will be replaced by safeties coach Justin Hamilton, will coach his last game against Kentucky in the Belk Bowl.
