12. Baylor Bears, 89.03

  • Roster Strength: 88.19 (10)
  • Team Performance: 89.55 (9)
  • Head Coach Rating: 85.71 (24)

As unlikely as it sounds, especially given Baylor lost 11 games just two years ago and the Bears played a very weak non-conference schedule this season, but Matt Rhule coached his team, which was playing with its third-string quarterback, into overtime with a chance to make the College Football Playoff on the line.

Say what you want about the schedule, but Baylor has played like a top-10 team all season according to our game grade metrics, and the Bears have built one of the best rosters in the Big 12. And hopefully, quarterback Charlie Brewer, who left the Big 12 Championship Game early after suffering a hard hit, will be back for the Sugar Bowl date with Georgia.

11. Oregon Ducks, 88.86

  • Roster Strength: 89.24 (6)
  • Team Performance: 88.47 (12)
  • Head Coach Rating: 84.95 (30)

The Pac-12 Championship Game set up very similarly to Oregon’s season opener against Auburn. The Ducks jumped out to a big lead in the first half, and then seemingly let off the gas. But unlike the loss to the Tigers, which coupled with an upset loss to Arizona State in the desert, Oregon regained control and blew out Utah 37-15 to secure a spot in the Rose Bowl.

Quarterback Justin Herbert has one final opportunity to polish his highlight reel for the NFL Draft, but disruptive pass rusher Kayvon Thibodeaux is just beginning. The true freshman provided constant pressure against Utah, and recorded 2.5 sacks and also blocked a punt. Expect to hear his name often during the bowl game, in the offseason, and leading up to the 2022 NFL Draft.
