3. Carolina Panthers

With Cam Newton (foot) out for the season, and Kyle Allen showing his warts over a longer sample of games, the Panther will start rookie quarterback Will Grier in Week 16 (and presumably Week 17 as well).

Head coach Ron Rivera was not allowed to finish the season in Carolina, as owner David Tepper tries to get a head start on ushering in a new era for the franchise. A decision on Newton, intertwined with his health and perhaps his own desire to move on, is also looming. Next year is the final year of his contract, and the Panthers can clear over $19 million in cap space by cutting or trading him, while absorbing just $2 million in dead money.

A new head coach will surely want at least some say over who the quarterback is next season, and beyond, in Carolina. It’s hard to see it being Newton, with all his question marks and plenty of other teams sure to be interested in him come the offseason. Allen or Grier may stick around, but only as depth or possible competitors to start.

Among the candidates to permanently replace Rivera as Panthers head coach right now is Stanford head coach David Shaw. Could a Pac-12 rivalry reunion come to Charlotte, with Rosen as the new quarterback picked by Shaw in concert with the front office?
