2019 NFL power rankings, Week 17: Bengals are No. 32 but pick No. 1
Recap: Winners of four consecutive games and with an opportunity to finish above .500, the Buccaneers played host to the AFC South-leading Houston Texans in a Saturday afternoon affair. Talented Jameis Winston once again threw for over 300 yards but his first attempt of the game was returned 27 yards for a score by Texans’ cornerback Bradley Roby. When it was all said and done, the fifth-year quarterback did throw one touchdown pass but served up a total of four interceptions. For the season, Winston has now thrown for 31 touchdown passes and committed 33 of the Bucs’ 38 turnovers. And Bruce Arians’ team saw its aforementioned winning streak come to an end.
Next Week: Arians’ club welcomes the Falcons to Raymond James Stadium in position to sweep this series for the first time since 2015. Back in Week 12 at Atlanta, Winston threw for 313 yards and three scores (2 interceptions) in a 35-22 victory. That impressive victory ended the Buccaneers’ five-game losing streak to this NFC South rival.
Draft Talk: NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reports that the Buccaneers have every intention of bringing back Winston in 2020. Given that news, it would be highly unlikely that the club would use a first-round pick on a quarterback. But the team could use some help on the offensive line and in the secondary, which has had another rough year.
Recap: Sean McVay’s team still had some slim playoff hopes as they made their way to the Bay Area to take on the 49ers. And the Rams looked the part of a team determined to keep their slim postseason hopes alive as they opened up a 21-10 lead in the second quarter. Jared Goff threw for 323 yards and two scores but also served up a pick six that proved to be very costly. Los Angeles’ defense sacked Niners’ quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo six times – all in the second half – and stole two of his passes. But tied late in the game, the Rams’ secondary had some crucial breakdowns in the final minute and a Robbie Gould field goal at the gun would eliminate McVay’s squad.
Next Week: The Rams look to end a disappointing season on a high note and continue their recent success against the rival Cardinals. Back in Week 13 in the desert, Goff hit on 32-of-43 throws for 424 yards and two scores in a 34-7 triumph. Los Angeles has won the last five meetings in this NFC West rivalry by a combined 164-32 score.
Draft Talk: After posting a 24-8 record, winning back-to-back NFC West titles and reaching Super Bowl LIII in his first two seasons, McVay saw his disappointing club eliminated from the playoffs on Saturday night. Not many expected the Rams to fall this hard so soon. For now, the franchise is without first-round picks in 2020 and ’21.
