Top 10 NFL free agents for the 2020 offseason
6. DT Chris Jones
Three missed games with a groin injury has dropped his raw numbers, after he registered 15.5 sacks in 2018. But Jones is having another very good season (eight sacks, 18 quarterback hits) with high level grades from PFF as a key piece in the Chiefs’ defense ending the season as well as it has down the stretch.
It’s hard to tab where defensive tackles fit in the NFL financial pie at times. But Jones is one of the best around, equally good as a pass rusher and a run defender, and as he gets set to hit the market he will surely get a deal rivalry that of the most highly compensated edge rushers.
5. DE/OLB Jadeveon Clowney
Clowney’s numbers don’t look that great this season, with just three sacks in 12 games heading into Week 17. But going into Week 16 Pro Football Focus had him ranked as the seventh-best edge defender in the league, among 119 qualifiers, and his stoutness as a run defender offsets his not necessarily being an elite level pass rusher of the kind he was expected to be coming into the league.
Clowney should be scheme versatile, able to play outside linebacker in a 3-4 but with the size (255 pounds) to hold up as an end in a 4-3.
The Seahawks could retain Clowney with a franchise tag, but he seems more likely to hit the open market. The multi-year contract he gets is sure to be toward the top among edge guys.
