Top 10 NFL free agents for the 2020 offseason
4. WR Amari Cooper
The Cowboys gave up a first-round pick to get Cooper last year, knowing they may only have him for a season and a half as he was set to hit free agency after this year. He has has a good first full season in Dallas, with 75 catches for over 1,000 yards and eight touchdowns heading into Week 17 despite being nearly constantly banged up and with a production drop-off down the stretch.
The Cowboys literally took Cooper off the field in a key Week 16 situation in a must-win game, so their willingness to pony up and pay him $18 million a year on a new deal is an easy question. But there will be other suitors if Dallas can’t get a long-term deal done, and they don’t use the franchise tag on him. Cooper professed his desire to stay with the Cowboys this past week.
3. QB Drew Brees
Like another quarterback on this list, Brees is defying the age curve as he crosses into his 40’s (41 on Jan. 15). If the Saints win the Super Bowl this year, there’s a chance he would retire, but a more likely scenario has him continuing to play and re-upping with the Saints for at least one more year.
But the idea Brees could be available on the open market is an intriguing one right now, as he continues to set career and single-season records. On the incredibly remote chance Sean Payton leaves to take the Cowboys’ head coaching job, perhaps Brees would himself consider other options upon the open of 2020 league business in March.
