3. Kansas City Chiefs

12-4 (AFC West champions)

No. 2 Seed in AFC

Overview: This past offseason, the organization made a change at defensive coordinator and hired Steve Spagnuolo.  He installed the 4-3 and the hope was that the team could bounce back from a year in which it allowed 421 points in the regular season and 37 points at home in the overtime loss in the AFC title game. It took a little time but the club’s current six-game winning streak has a lot to do with that improvement. Patrick Mahomes didn’t set the world on fire in his second season as a starter. These Chiefs appear to be a team that can beat you in numerous ways and that bodes well with the playoffs ahead.

Postseason History: It’s been a struggle for quite some time when it comes to the playoffs. The Chiefs’ lone NFL title came via a 23-7 victory over the Minnesota Vikings in Super Bowl IV a mere 50 years ago. This is Kansas City’s fifth straight trip to the playoffs and sixth appearance in seven years under Reid.

Potential Opponents: Reid’s team could face either the Patriots, Texans or Bills in the divisional round when the team returns to action on January 12. Of course, the postseason has been a nightmare for this franchise for decades. The Chiefs own a 10-19 all-time playoff record, including a 3-8 ledger at home.
