4. Chicago Bears – OC

The Bears cleaned out some of the assistant coaching ranks after the season, notably including offensive coordinator Mark Helfrich. It’s mostly a cosmetic, behind the scenes/game planning move, as the offense is clearly head coach Matt Nagy’s baby. But that side of the ball needs to improve next year, or the odds Nagy will be gone will grow with each passing game of Mitch Trubisky’s shortcomings being on full display.

Former Giants head coach Pat Shurmur is an easy candidate to be the new offensive coordinator in Chicago. But Garrett now has a place on that list of candidates, with roots on that side of the ball as a former offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach. Perhaps, with the ability to focus on that role and not having to handle the big picture things a head coach does, Garrett would shine as an offensive mind in a way that Cowboys’ fans would deem patently unlikely.

With the prospect of changes at head coach and general manager after next season if the Bears don’t make the playoffs, Chicago might be a one-year pit stop for Garrett, Shurmur or anyone else who may become the new offensive coordinator. But for Garrett, that is probably all he needs in order to stay “in the game” and become a legit head coaching candidate looking toward 2021.
