3. New England Patriots –  OC

Talk about the potential to fail upward. If Josh McDaniels finally leaves for a head coaching job, with multiple teams interested in him making that seem inevitable (including the Cowboys now?), Bill Belichick will be looking for a new offensive coordinator. Tom Brady’s future is also easily interlaced with that possible search for McDaniels’ replacement, as the new guy would presumably have to come with the four-time Super Bowl MVP’s stamp of approval if he’s coming back next season. Internal candidates may take precedent if Brady is coming back next year.

Garrett could spend a season (or more?) under Belichick’s wing learning the Patriot Way, and expanding his football mind before surfacing again as a head coaching candidate whenever the time is right. There are definitely a lot worse places to be and operate relatively under the radar, even if Garrett feels like a pretty odd fit for New England right now.

If/when the Patriots look for a new offensive coordinator in the coming days or weeks, someone with experience would seem to be a priority. The direction the quarterback situation takes is a big factor, but Garrett should be on Belichick’s radar to some degree already.
