2. Cleveland Browns – HC

The Browns seem to be doing things backwards again, set to hire a head coach before a new general manager and ready give said coach a lot of say beyond the needed “alignment” the two jobs should have. Owner Jimmy Haslam has also placed some priority on coaches with NFL experience, which is the obvious pivot after Freddie Kitchens was elevated to head coach after only a partial season on his resume as an offensive coordinator.

For all his flaws in offensive imagination and in-game decision-making/situational awareness, Garrett seemed to be a steady presence who never lost the Cowboys’ locker room through a lot of ups and downs. The Browns were simply a mess in that regard under Kitchens this year, with players and coaches apparently going so far as to tell opposing teams as much throughout the season, beyond what was visible on the field.

Garrett would be a steady experienced hand for Cleveland, if nothing else. Perhaps he would last longer than a season or two, as many of his predecessors have, if that translated to better success on the field. The wide net cast in the Browns’ head coaching search has to now include Garrett.
