5 new jobs for former Cowboys coach Jason Garrett next season
1. New York Giants – HC
As his future in Dallas became a bigger question, and before Pat Shurmur was finally fired last week, Garrett to the Giants surfaced as a possibility. NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport also passed along indications of the team’s interest in Garrett going back a number of years and the interest would seem to be mutual now.
"If the Giants move on from Shurmur and the Cowboys and Garrett were to part ways, my understanding is the Giants have emerged as a real and legitimate potential landing spot for Garrett, which would be his preferred destination if he can’t stick with the Cowboys. Back in 2014, the Giants were trying to decide if they should fire Tom Coughlin. They would have fired Coughlin if they could have gotten Garrett. Instead he signed an extension (with the Cowboys)."
With Mike McCarthy now off the board, as he’ll replace Garrett in Dallas, and questions about Josh McDaniels’ level of interest in the job as he entertains his options, the Giants may be left with Matt Rhule and now Garrett as their top head coaching candidates.
Garrett’s experience in the NFC East should work to his advantage in the Giants’ search, as will his acumen as a talent evaluator and steady presence as a locker room culture setter. Since Tom Coughlin’s departure, the Giants have notably lacked in the latter area from their head coach. As boring a hire as it would be in the grand scheme of things, Garrett might be just what the Giants need.
