5 candidates to replace Matt Rhule as Baylor football head coach
3. Dino Babers, Syracuse Head Coach
After a 10-win season in 2018, the Orange fell to a disappointing 5-7 this past season, Babers’ fourth at the helm. That has led to some coaching staff changes, in particular in an effort to at least be serviceable defensively.
But Babers has made his name on the offensive side of the ball, across head coaching stops at Eastern Illinois and Bowling Green before Syracuse. He also worked under Briles as wide receivers coach at Baylor from 2008-2011, so he has that tie as well as that influence on his offensive philosophy. Which is to say, playing with pace while also being pretty balanced. In 2018, the Orange were 11th in the country in scoring offense (40.2 points per game), and 19th in total offense (464.8 yards per game), while averaging at least 200 yards per game through the air and on the ground.
Babers is not necessarily on the hot seat at Syracuse looking toward next year, and he may not be itching to leave if an opportunity came. But Baylor should check in on him, as they enter a late head coaching search, even if it brings a quick thanks but no thanks.
